چکیده

The aversion of hydrophobic solutes for water drives diverse interactions and assemblies across materials science, biology beyond. % Here, we review the theoretical, computational experimental developments which underpin a contemporary understanding effects. We discuss how an density fluctuations in bulk can shed light on fundamental differences hydration molecular macroscopic solutes; these differences, turn, explain why become stronger upon increasing temperature. also illustrate sensitive dependence surface hydrophobicity chemical topographical patterns displays, makes use approximate approaches estimating particularly challenging. Importantly, complex surfaces, such as those proteins, display nanoscale heterogeneity, nevertheless be characterized using interfacial fluctuations; characterization informs protein regions that mediate their interactions. Finally, build ability to characterize inform context-dependent thermodynamic forces drive desolvation barriers impede them.

Hydrophobic nanoconfinement suppresses fluctuations in supercooled water.

We perform very efficient Monte Carlo simulations to study the phase diagram of a water monolayer confined in a fixed disordered matrix of hydrophobic nanoparticles between two hydrophobic plates. We consider different hydrophobic nanoparticle concentrations c. We adopt a coarse-grained model of water that, for c = 0, displays a first-order liquid-liquid phase transition (LLPT) line with negati...

Water density fluctuations relevant to hydrophobic hydration are unaltered by attractions.

An understanding of density fluctuations in bulk water has made significant contributions to our understanding of the hydration and interactions of idealized, purely repulsive hydrophobic solutes. To similarly inform the hydration of realistic hydrophobic solutes that have dispersive interactions with water, here we characterize water density fluctuations in the presence of attractive fields th...

Quantifying Density Fluctuations in Water at a Hydrophobic Surface: Evidence for Critical Drying.

Employing smart Monte Carlo sampling techniques within the grand canonical ensemble, we investigate the properties of water at a model hydrophobic substrate. By reducing the strength of substrate-water attraction, we find that fluctuations in the local number density, quantified by a rigorous definition of the local compressibility χ(z), increase rapidly for distances z within one or two molecu...

Fluctuations of water near extended hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces.

We use molecular dynamics simulations of the SPC-E model of liquid water to derive probability distributions for water density fluctuations in probe volumes of different shapes and sizes, both in the bulk as well as near hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces. Our results are obtained with a biased sampling of coarse-grained densities that is easily combined with molecular dynamics integration al...

Large decrease of fluctuations for supercooled water in hydrophobic nanoconfinement.

Using Monte Carlo simulations, we study a coarse-grained model of a water layer confined in a fixed disordered matrix of hydrophobic nanoparticles at different particle concentrations c. For c=0, we find a first-order liquid-liquid phase transition (LLPT) ending in one critical point at low pressure P. For c>0, our simulations are consistent with a LLPT line ending in two critical points at low...
